Six important tips for planting a large tree

Ebben trees - large tree in garden

Growing large trees between 7 and 18 metres tall requires careful planning, the right conditions and a lot of patience. At tree nursery Ebben, we specialise in this. We grow large, feathered-, and multi-stemmed trees in all sizes and shapes. Buying a large tree from the nursery has many advantages. For instance, a large tree provides an immediate impact of shade, shelter, aesthetics and numerous ecological benefits. As a result, installing mature trees can also increase the value of a property or land.

Large trees are often bought by older people. The argument, ‘We want to enjoy the trees to the full for the rest of our lives.’ is often mentioned. It is said that buying older trees is one of the few opportunities in life where you can buy time. Fortunately, many younger people now also see thebenefits and necessity of larger plants for maintaining a liveable environment. The consciousness of society is slowly changing. And there is no doubt that large trees in cities have a greater benefit for people than the usual standard sizes.

Many companies have also now realised that a high-quality design of the outdoor area of their premises improves the working atmosphere and quality of stay, and large trees have an important part in this. A green design of the business premises makes the company more attractive to employees and increases their identification with the company. At our 550-hectare growing area, you are sure to find the right tree to suit the right environment. Below, we give 6 tips you should pay attention to when planting a large tree.

1. Habitat of the tree

The chosen tree species should, of course, be suitable for the climate in which you want to plant it in. For example, there are frost-sensitive tree species that cannot be planted in mountainous areas. The soil type is also important. Some trees have special preferences for the soil in which they grow (e.g. sandy or clay soil). It is important to know whether the tree you choose is suitable for your location.

2. Location of the tree

Make sure you know how many hours of sunlight the intended location will get. Most large trees need sufficient sunlight to remain large and healthy. Make sure the tree gets enough sun, without being shaded by buildings or other trees. If you have a spot in mind with fewer sunlight duration, look for a tree that thrives in the shade. A very windy spot is also something to take into account. Larger tree canopy volumes create more wind resistance, increasing the risk of branch breakage.

3. Planting

On no account plant the root ball too deep. In general, it is more usual to plant a little too high, allowing the tree to grow more easily. Good drainage in the planting hole is important. Waterlogging is not tolerated by many plants. In the beginning, it may be necessary to anchor the tree, through root ball anchoring or underground anchoring.

4. Water management

Care of the plants in the first few years is very important for good growth results. This care is the responsibility of the customer or his gardener. Especially watering should be carried out with great care. All newly planted trees should be watered in summer by the landscaper. It is important to find the right balance. Not too much and not too little, adapted to rainfall and weather.

5. Nutrition and fertilisation

Depending on the type of soil, there are different ways to improve it. Heavy soil is made more permeable and airy with sand or lava. A nutrient-poor sandy soil can be improved by adding compost, for example. Large trees need sufficient nutrients to grow healthily. Some trees thrive better in slightly acidic or more alkaline soil, so it is important to know the pH of the soil. The pH level can be changed slightly by adding lime or other soil improvers

6. Pruning and shaping

Regular and professional pruning contributes to a stable trunk and a balanced tree crown. Removing dead, diseased or weak branches promotes the health of the tree and is of course important for safety. If the tree is growing rapidly, summer pruning may be necessary to prevent branches from becoming too heavy or breaking in the wind.
